I’ll be honest: when I started DJing a decade ago I had no interest in doing weddings. Not my scene, I thought. I don’t play wedding music. I ain’t livin’ on a prayer. But yeah, it wasn’t long before I agreed to do one. A friend asked me to DJ at her reception. And then one of her friends got engaged and wanted my number. Before long I had strangers reaching out and, somehow, each wedding was more fun than the last.
Fact: 1960s Soul records (Motown 45s, in particular) are the original party starters. And, from the dozens of weddings I’ve now done, I can say they are truly universal in their appeal. When that dance floor opens I frequently see young children, grandparents, and every generation in between laughing and dancing together to my old records. Most of them have probably been celebrating with this music all of their lives.
That said, prospective clients are definitely NOT limited to Soul music at their reception. On the contrary. The best part of this job, for me, is collaborating with the bride and groom to compile their dream wedding playlist. I will happily take however much or little direction you care to provide and tailor my record box to fit your vision. This can include song requests from literally any genre or era. Anything that I can’t source on vinyl will be played digitally. I go above and beyond for my clients and take great pride in the Testimonials section of this website.
So it turns out I do play wedding music after all—but only for likeminded couples who are looking for an exciting and memorable soundtrack to complement their own unique aesthetics. I still ain’t livin’ on a prayer though…
SOUL DEEP is the alternative to every traditional Top 40 wedding DJ in Detroit. I provide a specialized music service that is admittedly not for everyone, but over the years I’ve connected with so many cool and interesting couples who want to do things a bit different on their big day. More than I ever imagined were out there. If that sounds like you, let’s get together and see if we’re a match.
